If You’re Working Past Age 65, Do You Need Medicare?
Question - If you’re working past age 65, do you need Medicare? I get asked this frequently. The truth is, it depends.
If you’re still working at 65, you have coverage under a group health plan through your employer, and your employer has 20 employees or more, then you don’t have to enroll in Medicare right away.
But if your employer has less
than 20 employees, you DO need to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B because Medicare will be your primary insurance.
I advise my clients to run the numbers, see what makes sense financially and provides the best possible coverage. Every benefit plan is different and needs to be compared to Medicare coverage option.
In many instances, it makes sense to enroll in Medicare Part A on time (age 65), even if you have health coverage because Medicare can serve as your secondary insurance and potentially cover expenses not covered by your primary insurance.
If you plan on working after you turn 65, let’s review your employer’s plan and let me help you decide whether you should sign up for Medicare to augment your coverage, or delay signing up until you retire.
